About Freshfields.
The mixed-use village of Freshfields will be both destination and inspiration. It was envisioned as an everyday gathering place for those who live, visit, and work on Kiawah Island, Seabrook Island, and John's Island. But, much like a "Crossroads" of years past, it will also intrigue those from more distant environs. Pleasurable for pedestrians, restful for vacationers, convenient during lunch breaks, and revitalizing to residents, Freshfields will celebrate healthy lifestyles and a fresh approach to living.
Major gateways to the village will reinforce the Freshfields name with agricultural imagery such as fields of flowers, vegetables under cultivation, and rows of grapevine trellises. Plants will thrive in profusion at the entries to small specialty stores, an open-air farmer's market, soothing water accents, public promenades, and areas for special events. A variety of convenient professional services, plus a grocery store enriched with healthy foods and environmentally friendly products will be essential parts of the mix.
Social and communal activities will help the continual growth of business for the village's mostly local merchants. A salubrious walking environment will place focus on shopping for healthy foods and savoring fresh tastes at a variety of restaurants and cafés.
The informality of streetscapes will pervade alleys, interior courtyards for shops and restaurants, and the natural buffers of vegetation that encircle it all. Landscaping, architecture, and pleasant, walkable streets will enhance daytime errands and leisure and set the stage for lively evenings spent in interesting company.
To provide connections with Lowcountry surroundings and its setting near the sea, Freshfields architecture will draw upon our Carolinas' rich coastal heritage. Unlike uniform developments obviously created by "one hand," Freshfields will appear to have arisen over time as a multi-textured collection of charming structures fashioned from wood with brick, stucco, tabby, or shingle-style elements. Vernacular exteriors with traditional rooflines will extend a welcoming personality. Open sheds with verandas, over-hanging roofs, Bermuda shutters, operable louvers, and breezeways, composed in practical unpretentious shelters, will reinterpret cherished regional styles.
Intimately-scaled buildings set along well-shaded pedestrian streets and ways will foster community connections and inspire memories of Freshfields as a destination for spirit and enjoyment.
